报告简介

Does group identity affect belief formation? In an online experiment with a representative sample from the US, individuals display ingroup bias in the demand for as well as the processing of information. We employ a combination of measurement and treatment experiments to demonstrate that ingroup bias cannot be solely attributed to perceived differences in the instrumental value of information, motivated beliefs, or variations in initial priors. Rather, we identify the group association of information itself (source valence) as a novel determinant of biased belief formation, akin to ingroup bias in allocation decisions. Using the 2020 US presidential election as a setting, we illustrate how these mechanisms may contribute to political polarization and relate our findings to recent theoretical advances in the literature on information avoidance as well as Bayesian learning.
